Oklahoma CPAs Honored

OKLAHOMA CITY — CPAs from across the state received honors at the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants Annual Members Meeting on June 12 at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Among the awards given were Distinguished CPAs, Gold and Silver Pen Awards, Public Service Award and one induction into the Oklahoma Accounting Hall of Fame.

J. Patrick Milligan, CPA, was inducted as the 50th member of the Oklahoma Accounting Hall of Fame. Milligan is a partner at HoganTaylor, LLP in Tulsa and has been an active member of the OSCPA for almost 30 years.

Milligan was selected based on his contributions to the OSCPA and the Oklahoma accounting profession. Secret nominating committees that select AHOF inductees are comprised of three prior recipients of the award, who make recommendations concerning the member or members who should be inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame at the Annual Members Meeting.

With his long history of extensive community service and volunteerism, Nick Gales, CPA, was honored as the recipient of the Public Service Award. Gales is the managing partner of Gales & Associates in Oklahoma City and has been an active OSCPA member for more than 35 years.

Eric P. Winden, CPA, PFS, was announced as the Gold Pen Award recipient for his article, "Congress Realigns the Preparer Penalty." It was published in the January/February 2009 issue of CPAFOCUS, the OSCPA’s member magazine. Winden is a tax manager and principal shareholder at Gates, Winden & Associates, PC in Tulsa.

Jim H. Small, CPA, received the Silver Pen Award. Small, a controller for Drysdales, Inc. in Tulsa, won for his article, “The Business of Ethics,” published in the September/October 2008 issue of CPAFOCUS.

The seven-member editorial board of the OSCPA selected first and second place writing awards from overall member contributions to the publication for the preceding fiscal year. Articles are chosen based on readability, content, technical appeal and relevance.

Four CPAs received the Distinguished CPA Award. The Eastern Chapter of the OSCPA honored Judy Hoffman, CPA, a managing partner for Hoffman Accounting & Tax Services, PLLC, in Muskogee, Okla. with the award. Hoffman has been an OSCPA member for 20 years. Phil Hollingsworth, CPA, co-owner of Picek & Hollingsworth, PC, was selected by the Norman Chapter of the OSCPA for the honor. Hollingsworth has been a member of OSCPA for more than 25 years. The South Central Chapter of the OSCPA chose Larry A. Pulliam, CPA, the president of the Southern Oklahoma Memorial Foundation in Ardmore, Okla. as its honoree. Pulliam has been a member of the OSCPA for almost 30 years. Dan B. Doyle, CPA, represented the Tulsa Chapter of the OSCPA for the award. Doyle, a fellow member for more than 10 years, is the manager of enterprise general accounting for Williams Companies in Tulsa.

OSCPA chapters select their Distinguished CPAs based on criteria measuring community involvement, professionalism and activism in the CPA profession.

With more than 6,600 members in public practice, industry, government and education, the OSCPA is Oklahoma’s only statewide professional association of CPAs. Since 1918, the organization has continued to provide professional education, conduct quality reviews and promote and maintain high standards of integrity and competence within the accounting profession.
