This year's Virtual CPA Day at the Capitol is your chance to learn more about OSCPA's advocacy efforts and the upcoming bills that could affect your profession. You will gain a better understanding of how Oklahoma lawmakers evaluate bills and issues when it comes to the work you do as a CPA – and how the OSCPA and our membership work to pass favorable legislation on your behalf.

  • 10:30am - 11:00am: How to Become Involved - Blaine Peterson, CPA; Carlos Johnson, CPA; Rob Sellers, CPA; Benny Vanatta

Objectives

  • Discuss the legislative processes of Oklahoma's Senate and House of Representatives.
  • Identify upcoming key issues affecting the CPA profession, and become comfortable discussing those issues.

Instructors

Carlos E. Johnson

Dr. Carlos Johnson, CPA, has more than 40 years of experience specializing in the practice of financial institutions, higher education, government, not-for-profit and retail accounting. He has taught accounting and served as the dean at East Central University School of Business and as accounting faculty at Oklahoma State University while earning his doctorate. He is also a 2015 inductee in the Spears School of Business Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University. Additionally, Dr. Johnson is the past chair of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

Marcus McEntire

Rep. Marcus McEntire a Republican representing OK District 50, was elected in 2016 and currently serves on several committees including the Appropriations and Budget Committee.

Blaine M. Peterson

Blaine M. Peterson, CPA, J.D., is the president and CEO of the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants. Peterson is a member of the OSCPA, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Oklahoma Bar Association. Peterson received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma as well as his juris doctorate, also from the University of Oklahoma. He is a certified public accountant and licensed attorney. Blaine has been an OSCPA member for more than 20 years and previously served as a director at large for the OSCPA Board of Directors and board liaison to the OSCPA’s Taxation, Personal Financial Planning and Business Valuation/Forensic & Litigation Support Committees.

Robert A. Sellers

Rob Sellers, CPA, serves as executive director of the Opportunity Scholarship Fund, a scholarship granting organization that provides assistance to low income families. Sellers, a CPA for more than 35 years, also assists clients with financial, systems, operations and business-related matters. He is a past OSCPA board member, chairman of various OSCPA committees and currently serves as a trustee on the CPA-PAC. Sellers is also a past recipient of the OSCPA’s Outstanding CPA in Business and Industry Award and actively involved in a number of civic and charitable organizations in the Tulsa area.

Benny F. Vanatta

Benny Vanatta, the OSCPA's lobbyist, is known for constructing and executing strategic plans for his clients in the area of government relations based on his expertise and professional experience as a former member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

A native of Bartlesville, Okla., Benny accepted a basketball scholarship to Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business. He also earned a Master of Adult Education Administration from Oklahoma State University.

After a decorated military tour in Vietnam, he returned home to take a position with Central Vo-Tech in Sapulpa as the campus director and director of adult education. Benny served the Sapulpa district in the Oklahoma House of Representatives for five continuous terms. Then, in 1989, left to enter the field of governmental relations, founding Vanatta and Associates.

Vanatta is joined in the firm by his wife, Vicki, who has a valuable background in the government arena with experience in the Oklahoma State Senate, Oklahoma House of Representatives, State Auditor’s office and the State Attorney General’s office.
