April 21, 2022

Kency DuarteSince graduating from Alabama A&M University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and earning his CPA license in both Oklahoma and Puerto Rico, Kency Duarte, CPA, has found his niche in audit and assurance work.

Duarte first entered the audit field in 2013. Nearly 10 years later, he continues to hone his audit abilities and now serves as an assurance senior manager for Arledge & Associates, P.C. in Edmond, Okla.

Duarte prides himself on his ability to serve the needs of his clients and offer them consistent, quality work.

"Being completely committed and serving the clients with the level of respect they deserve has always been a standard I live by," he said.

Duarte will be sharing the audit knowledge he has gained throughout his career at his upcoming CPE session, Basic Single Audits for the First-Timer, at the OSCPA's Governmental Accounting & Auditing Conference, May 5-6 in Norman, Okla.

The session will provide an overview of Single Audit requirements and basic considerations helpful to Single Audit first-timers.

"Attendees will be able to identify whether a Single Audit will be required, understand client risk, differentiate major programs and understand the tools available to guide them during testing of such programs," Duarte said.

Q&A with Kency Duarte, CPA

Wire: What do you believe is the greatest service your role as an assurance senior manager allows you to offer your clients?
Duarte: The greatest service my role as an assurance manager allows me to offer is being understanding of our clients and being able to meet them where they are. Being at a local firm gives me the opportunity to be fully present for each one of them, treating them with the priority they deserve.

Wire: What are some words of advice you would give to new CPAs working in auditing?
Duarte: To be patient and self driven. Patient, because audit only gets better with repetition over the years. Self driven, because the only thing holding you back is yourself. The moment you think you know it all and feel comfortable, there are new responsibilities and changes in standards that require time.

Wire: You have experience doing audit work for a wide variety of entities, including municipalities, governmental agencies, tribes and school districts. How has having such varied experiences served you and made you more knowledgeable?
Duarte: Working with different industries has given me the opportunity to learn about what is important to each one of those industries and what is important to users of the services we provide.

Wire: This will be one of your first times leading a session for an OSCPA CPE event! What inspired you to expand your Society involvement to include being a discussion leader?
Duarte: I believe it’s important we get involved and participate as much as possible. The Society does a fantastic job investing in us. I believe we all have different stories, and if my story can help inspire others, then I believe I have added value to our Society.
