U.S. Senate Unanimously Passes Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act

October 05, 2026

The U.S. Senate recently unanimously passed the Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at modernizing Internal Revenue Service (IRS) operations and improving the taxpayer experience.

The legislation includes several long-supported reforms designed to make it easier for taxpayers and tax professionals to access information and communicate with the IRS. Key provisions include expanded electronic access to taxpayer information, improved online account functionality and digitized correspondence, helping reduce reliance on paper-based processes.

The TAS Act also strengthens taxpayer protections while creating a more efficient and responsive tax administration system. The AICPA recently also applauded the passage of the TAS ACT, for which it along with state CPA societies has long advocated for as part of improvements to IRS operations.

As the legislation moves forward, the OSCPA will continue to monitor developments affecting IRS operations and taxpayer services.
