Meet Harley Pennington, CPA

Harley Pennington, CPA, is a Cameron University graduate with both a bachelor’s in accounting and an MBA. Harley has taken on roles across multiple sectors that require building and improving financial systems. From starting a finance department from the ground up to managing multiple tax clients, he focuses on creative problem solving and delivering reliable results.

He also gives back through both his profession and his community. Harley is an active OSCPA member and volunteers with the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education. He also serves in leadership roles with the Comanche Nation, helping support financial education and community development.  

What He Has to Say

OSCPA: Why did you decide to become a CPA? 

Pennington: I decided to become a CPA because I wanted a career where I could lead with integrity and make a tangible difference for people and organizations. When I first decided to major in accounting, I did so because I liked numbers and rules; however, I decided to become a CPA when I realized it was more about stewardship, trust, and helping others make informed decisions.

The CPA designation represents accountability and service to the public, and I was drawn to the responsibility that comes with that role. Becoming a CPA gave me the opportunity to combine leadership, technical skills, and a commitment to serving both clients and the broader community.

OSCPA: What has been your proudest moment in your career so far? 

Pennington: My proudest moments have come from earning trust as a leader and being asked to take on greater responsibility. Being relied on for judgment, communication, and guidance has been incredibly rewarding.

However, one moment stands out most. One of my former coworkers (and now a good friend) told me she had decided to go to college for accounting because she saw that I had invested in her, and the encouragement gave her the courage to take a chance. Knowing that my example and support helped someone push themselves was deeply meaningful. Moments like that remind me that leadership is not only about the work we do, but also the people we influence and help grow along the way. 

OSCPA: What do you hope to accomplish in your career? 

Pennington: I hope to build a career centered on leadership, mentorship, and community impact. Through my work and involvement with organizations that strengthen the profession and communities around me, I want to help develop future CPAs and support businesses and individuals with thoughtful financial guidance. Ultimately, my goal is to look back on a career focused on mentoring others and strengthening the communities we serve.
